Outpainting
Outpainting is extending an image past its original borders — the model invents new surroundings that continue the scene convincingly. It is how a tight crop becomes a wide shot.
Where inpainting fills a hole inside the frame, outpainting grows the frame itself. The model reads the edges of your image — the direction of a wall, the fall of light, the texture of a landscape — and generates what plausibly lies beyond them.
A concrete example: a vertical phone portrait needs to become a 16:9 website banner. Outpainting extends the background left and right, and the subject keeps their original sharpness because the centre pixels never change.
