Relighting is changing the light in a finished photo — direction, warmth, time of day — while the subject and identity stay intact. The AI re-renders the illumination, not the person.
Light touches every pixel, which is what makes relighting hard: changing it convincingly means re-deriving shadows, highlights, reflections and skin shading as if the scene had been shot again under different lamps. Modern models treat it as a conditional regeneration — same subject, new lighting rig — rather than a brightness filter.
A concrete example: a portrait shot at flat midday becomes a golden-hour shot — warm directional light, long soft shadows, lit hair — while the face remains recognisably, identically the person.
